If you have an oily skin, you know how hard maintaining it can be. People who have oily skins tend to have a host of skin problems such as clogged pores, blackheads and acne. Exposure of oily skin to dirt and pollution results in skin bumps. On the brighter side, there are simple home remedies that can help manage oily skin. Before discussing the cures, it is important to note that oily skin is also advantageous in that it is less susceptible to aging and wrinkling.
1. Scrub your skin once every week:
Exfoliate your skin using a suitable scrub once a week. Skin scrubs help in removing dead skin and dirt from the skin surface. Usually, oily skin attracts lots of dust which cause blackheads, whiteheads, and acne. Therefore, it is essential to remove the dirt from your face. However, you should not use scrub very frequently as it might result in the development of wrinkles on the skin. Also, do not be too hard on the face while scrubbing.
2. Drink lots of water:
Water is essential in reducing oil production. Water will hydrate the skin thus keep it glowing. When you do not take enough water, the sebaceous glands are prompted to produce more oil, to compensate for the hydration levels. When you take enough water, the brain signals the skin to stop the production of excess oil.
3. Apply face mask regularly:
After scrubbing your face, do not forget to apply a mask. Use a mask that is known to be effective against removing excess oil. Both commercial and homemade masks are useful for this. Whichever the mask, ensure that it contains kaolin, sandalwood powder, bentonite clay and fullers earth; which are suitable for removing excess grease from the skin. An appropriate face mask will improve the appearance of pores, remove excess oil and hydrate skin. Face masks also function as deep skin cleansers.
4. Moisturize and apply sunscreen:
Even oily skin requires moisturizing and hydration, just like dry skin. If you do not use a moisturizing product, the face will look greasy. Sunscreen is also essential but should be gel-based. When people with oily skins do not use sunscreen, they develop pigmentation problems when exposed to the sun.
5. Cleanse your skin twice a day:
Most people who have oily skin choose to wash their skin about three times a day. However, it is advisable to cleanse it only twice. Frequent washing of the face might remove all the moisture from the skin thus resulting in more production of oil. When cleansing the skin, ensure that you use a face wash that is only appropriate for oily skin. Gel-based cleansers are also proper. The most important point to note is that the product contains mild ingredients such as turmeric, lemon, neem and tea tree oil. Salicylic acid based cleaners are useful but should not be used severally on the skin.
6. Apply appropriate makeup:
Remember to use a primer when applying makeup, especially on the oiliest parts of your face. Use gel, powder or liquid based foundations. For liquid foundations, they should be water based and not oil based. Use a blotting paper to remove the excess grease when your makeup is on.
